Lyric Analysis

Today I'm going to analyse the Lyrics to the song 'Pretty Girl' by Maggie Lindemann to have a better insight in the song. In addition to that if there's a deeper meaning behind it I will be able to understand it with analysis so when I do my music video I can ensure it relates back to the lyrics of the song.

CHORUS

I can swear, I can joke

I say what's on my mind

If I drink, if I smoke

I keep up with the guys

And you see me holding up my middle finger to the world

Fuck your ribbons and your pearls
'
Cause I'm not just a pretty girl

In the first line we can see Lindmann suggesting that she can do whatever she likes. We know this as by her implying that she can swear which is tend to not be associated with girls. This shows that she's a person with feelings and can say whatever she likes. The 3rd and 4th line indicates that she isn't restricted by her gender as normally drinking and smoking is something the 'guys' do which shows that gender shouldn't restrict her. The final two lines which include her saying "She's just not a pretty girl" is her saying that she's more than her looks. This is because women are normally judged on how they look and this goes against the stereotype as she says she doesn't need to dress nice cause she's more than what she looks like.

VERSE 1

I'm more than just a picture

I'm a daughter and a sister

Sometimes it's hard for me to show

That I'm more than just a rumour

Or a song on your computer

There's more to me than people know

The first two line suggest that she's more than just what people think of physically. This is because people tend to judge people on how they look like but here she says that she's more than just that as she's a daughter and a sister which shows that there's more to her than just her looks. The lines where it talks about her being more than a rumour and a song on the computer can indicate she's more than just a singer and or what people say. This is because people will mainly know her for her music and what others say but she implies here that her life involves more than just that but people don't see it.

PRE-CHORUS

Some days I'm broke, some days I'm rich

Some days I'm nice, some days I can be a bitch

Some days I'm strong, some days I quit

I don't let it show, but I've been through some shit

The pre-chorus shows that she's not perfect as some people will think. This is because she keeps saying some days but has positives and negatives such as "Some days I'm nice, some days I can be a bitch". This shows that she's a normal human being just like everyone else which means that she's going against the stereotype of women being perfect at everything they do.

VERSE 2

I'm more than just a number

I'm a hater, I'm a lover

Sometimes it's hard for me to show

That I'm more than just a title

Or a comment going viral

There's more to me than people know

The first line could be implying that she's more than what boys see of her. This is because it's normal for boys to hook up on girls by getting their number which she says that there's more to her than her looks which she constantly reminds everyone of throughout the song and by saying "I'm a hater, I'm a lover" this shows again that she's telling people she's a normal human. The last three lines are significant. This is because by her saying I'm more than just a title this can indicate there's more to her than being a 'pretty girl'. When she mentions the comment going viral this indicates that she's more than what people think about her temporarily. This is because stuff stay viral for a limited amount of time which shows that when she stops being viral people don't see the stuff she does and therefore only judge her by what they see for a limited amount of time.
