The word Auteur is a french word for 'author' and the meaning in media terms is that it's an single artists who controls aspects of a creative work and is equivalent to the author of a novel or a play.
I'm going to be using Spike Jonze as an example of an Auteur artist. Spike Jonze is 48 years old and was born in New York. He's a producer an actor that attended San Fransisco Art institute in California and is known for collaborations in music with the likes of Beastle Boys and Weezer. The way his music videos became an Auteur is by him using commercial apparatus of film making. He makes videos that are off beat in line with the story, live performance videos and sometimes the use of animation.
I'm going to be analysing some of the music videos which he directed and will be showing you some of things he has done in them videos which make him an Auteur artist.
1. Weezer - Buddy Holly
Weezer was a rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1992 and had four members Rivers Cuomo, Patrick Wilson, Brain Bell and Scott Shriner. The song was released in 1994 and was nominated for MTV Video Music award for Video of the Year. As said before he usually made videos which are off beat such as live performances which was the case in Buddy Holly. In the music video we see the band playing in a room filled with people which shows the live performance aspect. The whole video is portrayed as an episode rather than music video as halfway through the music video it says 'to be continued' and throughout the video is off beat. This is an example of a creative music video as normally when bands use the 'live performance' way they just show one of their concerts whereas in this video we see them performing and in the start and the end it shows it as a show which makes the video interesting and engaging for the viewer.

The song Otis was released in 2011 featuring Jay-Z and Kanye West who're one of the biggest Hip-Hop artists in the game. The song was number 12 on the US billboard hot 100 and reached number 2 on Billboard Hot Rap Songs. Throughout the music video we can tell that Spike Jonze has set the music video so the rappers are seen as they're having fun. You can even possibly say that Spike Jonze wanted the video to be 'comical' which he usually likes to do with his music videos as we can see lots of laughter throughout the video. In the editing we can see that some scenes are slow paced and fast paced. The reason for this is that when Jonze wanted to emphasis something such as the rappers having fun he'll do it slow paced so the audience can see the facial expressions of them.
